There are many ‘something specials’ about the Pacific Northwest: lush valley living, outdoor recreation, community gardens, woodsy trails, and hidden waterfalls that surprise and delight. Raising a family in Washington State is a gift—and one that the Hankel Family wanted to take full advantage of.
GROWING A FAMILY IN THE PNW
From Dream to Reality
David and Malyda Hankel owned land in Burbank, Washington. Actively searching for a way to build their dream house, they came across Adair Homes, took a look at the available floor plans—and knew right away that the Mt. Rainier home was going to change their lives in a very good way.
“We fell in love with the Mt Rainier floor plan…the size and the layout felt perfect for what our family needed,” says Malyda Hankel. “We love how open and airy the plan is.”
With a growing family of six, the Hankel’s were looking for room to spread out.
Customized to Fit Your Lifestyle
“The children will be able to enjoy rooms of their own, which will be a welcome change after living with the grandparents,” says Cindy Mathis, Home Ownership Counselor for the Mid Columbia Valley region. “Malyda’ s love of entertaining will be rewarded with an open concept design and beautiful kitchen.”
The Hankel’s also chose to raise the ceilings to 9-feet, add a custom patio cover, and opt for the upgraded primary bathroom layout that offers a separate tub and shower.
“It was great [designing the home]; we worked with the Kennewick team,” says David. “They were very easy to work with from start to finish.”
At the Design Center, David and Malyda chose Shaw Bungalow carpet in Cool Taupe, and added tile around the electric fireplace. They also opted for Quartz countertops and a full height backsplash in the kitchen. When it came to cabinets, the Hankel’s chose Beech wood with a tobacco stain, and on the floors, decided to install Luxury vinyl plank flooring in Castagna. The combination is stunning and classic at the same time.
Challenges & Equity
Building a new home during a pandemic was a challenge the Hankel’s took on with aplomb.
“At first, it was a little rough due to having to overcome the covid pandemic and because we went through two Superintendents before we met Steve—who became the Super for our home,” says David. “Steve made it very easy and fun. He let us know when and what we needed to do.”
Taking advantage of Adair’s “Sweat Equity” program was easy. “We made sure we brought water, power, and septic to the property,” says Malyda. “We did pretty good; we had about $40,000 in equity when we moved in.”
Key Day was worthy of a celebration.
“We love our home and it turned out more beautiful than we imagined. Just knowing the work we put into the home makes all of us, including the kids, take so much more ownership in the home,” say Malyda.
As for last thoughts and advice, the Hankel’s kept it short and sweet, “Have patience. It will all come together, and it will be so worth it.”
